American Photo Magazine Subscription

american_photo.jpgThere are three main reasons I can think of that you might want to subscribe to American Photo magazine:

  1. You're interested in photography and want to learn more about the nuts and bolts, as well as see great examples of the work of others as inspiration.
  2. You're hoping the magazine will be a step up from National Geographic in terms of arty photos of lady parts, and offer some kind of plausible deniability.
  3. Some combination of the above.

All of these things are reasonable. How do I know? For point one, the product description:

This magazine is for men and women interested in creative photography. It profiles the personalities behind the lens and their contributions to art, history, fashion, journalism, and advertising. American Photo often features reviews of exhibitions and books, readers' photos and requests and picture portfolios and stories on working professionals.

For point two, a subscriber comment - "there are a lot "artistic" images that can be disturbing and there is a lot nudity mixed in almost gratuitously." See? A little something for everybody.

Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Books (Boxed Set)

kelby_boxed_set.jpgNo matter how many pictures you've snapped, there's always room to learn, whether it's technique, technical advice, or just a refresher. I've got this boxed set and have found it extremely helpful when I want to find something specific, and interesting enough I'll flip through the books for fun when I'm bored. This set would make a great gift for any digital photography enthusiast - I give it a definite thumbs up.

Each chapter is packed with plain English tips on using flash, shooting close up photography, travel photography, shooting people, and even how to build a studio from scratch, where he demystifies the process so anyone can start taking pro-quality portraits today! Plus, he's got full chapters on his most requested topics, including loads of tips for landscape photographers, wedding photographers, and there's an entire chapter devoted to sharing some of the pro's secrets for making your photos look more professional, no matter what you're shooting.
